As you can see from the climate map, Australia's climate ranges from a temperate climate along the south eastern and south western seaboard, a tropical climate across the northern part of Australia, with most of the remaining country being either grassland or desert.

Australia, like all countries in the Southern Hemisphere, has its 4 seasons in the below sequence:

  • Summer: December to February
  • Autumn: March to May
  • Winter: June to August
  • Spring: September to November

If you are coming down from the Northern Hemisphere, then be prepared as the timing of the seasons have been switched around. This means that Christmas down under is generally hot and dry if you are in the temperate and desert areas, and hot and wet in the tropical areas.

Australia's Tropical Regions

If you like tropical weather then head to the northern part of Australia where the temperatures are high and so is the humidity. The weather in the tropics have 2 seasons: the wet season and the dry season.

The wet season generally runs for 6 months across summer and spring, with most of the rain falling through December to March. The temperatures range between 30 and 50 degrees Celsius, and the humidity is high with a lot of rain and frequent flooding. The build up to the wet season is when it is at its most humid, with little relief from the humidity through day and night.

The dry season is the opposite, running across winter and autumn, with the driest months generally being May through to October. Temperatures are lower and the skies are clear, and there is very little rain.

Australia's Dry Regions

The driest regions in Australia are mostly found through the central part of Australia. These areas receive little rainfall, with large areas being desert or in some state of drought. During summer daytime temperatures can exceed 40 degrees celsius, and in winter the temperature can range from between 16 and 24 degrees, with night temperatures down to zero degrees.

Australia's Temperate Regions

The weather in temperate Australia ranges from hot summers and cool to cold winters. Daytime temperatures over summer average around 30 degrees Celsius, with winters averaging around 15 degrees. There are frequent periods of heat waves over summer and winters are cold, wet and windy, although quite mild compared to Europe. Australia does have snow, but generally in the mountains a few hours drive from Melbourne and Sydney.
