Northern Territory is a federal territory of Australia, and occupies the Northern central part of Australia. It covers an area of 1,349,129 square kilometres (520,902 sq mi), making it the third largest Australian division. Northern Territory has a population of approximately 220,000 people which makes it the least populous division on the mainland of Australia.
Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, and apart from Darwin and surrounds where most of the population live, the majority of the remaining population resides along the Stuart Highway in towns such as Katherine, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
There are some spectacular outback areas in the Northern Territory, including the Kakadu National Park, Litchfield National Park and Kata Tjuta National Park (Ayers Rock).
