Charleville
Channel Country

Accommodation      Tours      Weather

Charleville is located on the banks of the Warego River and is the largest town in Queensland's channel country. It is about 750kms from Brisbane, Queensland's capital, and was settled in the 1860s. The town is rich in pastoral history. By the 1880's Cobb & Co had established a coach building factory here which ran until 1920.

Charleville Heritage Walking Trail

The Charleville Heritage Walking Trail takes you through streets steeped in history and architectural examples dating back to the late 1800's. One of these is the The Hotel Corones, a beautiful building built for Greek migrant Harry (Poppa) Corones in 1929 who went on to be the first Greek in Australia to hold a hotel licence. Another lovely building is the Historic House built in 1888 which has high ceilings with carvings and cedar doors and marble fireplaces. You can pick up the trail map or audio guide from the Visitor Information Centre.

Tregole National Park

The Tregole National Park used to be a grazing property but was gazetted in 1975. The park has endangered and rare plants like the epiphytic black orchid and a diverse ecosystem that includes rainforest species dating back some 1.6million years ago. The day use area has a picnic area and a short walking track.

Bilby Experience

Charleville is home to the bilby breeding programme, which allows you to learn about these cute but endangered marsupials and experience a unique wildlife experience. The bilby experience is open between April and October.

Steiger Vortex Gun

In a misguided attempt to break the drought, a meteorologist convinced the Queensland Government to build Steiger Guns that were filled with gunpowder to send blasts of air into the atmosphere. While the approach didn't, work a rainmaker gun remains and you can visit it at Graham Andrews Parklands.

Fishing

There is great fishing to be had on the Warrego River just outside of Charleville where you can catch yellowbelly, catfish, silver and spangled perch. 10 mile, 18 mile, and 27 mile all offer fishing and camping.
