Queensland is in the North Eastern part of Australia, and its nickname is often referred to as the Sunshine State, since it enjoys warm weather and a sizeable portion of the state is in the tropics. Queensland covers an area of 1,727,000 square kilometres (666,798 sq mi), and has a population of around 4.4 million people, with most of the population living in its capital city of Brisbane and its surrounds of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Queensland borders the Northern Territory and New South Wales, and also South Australia in the South-West part of the state.Because of Queensland's size and location, there is a large variation in climate across the state. Most of Queensland's populace experiences two weather seasons: winter has warm temperatures and minimum rainfall, and summer is hot and sticky and higher levels of rain.
