South Australia
Marree, with a population of around 300, is located around 685kms North of Adelaide, at the junction of the Oodnadatta Track and the Birdsville Track. Lake Eyre is in close proximity and is best viewed from the air by tours operating out of Marree.

Lake Eyre
Lake Eyre was named after Edward John Eyre who was the first European to sight it in 1840. It is an extensive 'salt sink' and has only filled to capacity three times in the past 150 years. The Lake Eyre system covers an area of 9,690sq kms, and is roughly the same size as Holland. Inland rivers that flow into the lake include the Diamantina, Cooper Creek and the Warburton.
Oodnadatta Track
The Oodnadatta Track is a 620km unsealed track that runs between Marree and Marla, via Oodnadatta. The scenery is semi desert and there are a series of springs feeding water from the Great Artesian Basin. It follows the former railway line as far north as Oodnadatta, and then turns West meeting the sealed Stuart Highway at Marla.

Birdsville Track
The Birdsville Track runs for 500kms, starting from Marree, across both the Strzlecki Desert and Sturt's Stony Desert, and ending in Birdsville in South Western Queensland.
