With a population of over 5 million people, Victoria is Australia's second most populous state, with the majority of people living in Melbourne, Victoria's capital city. Victoria is bordered by New South Wales to the north, and South Australia to the west.

Victoria is Australia's smallest mainland state, covering an area of 227,416 square kilometres (87,805 sq mi). Despite its small size, the climate ranges from semi-arid and hot in the north-west, to temperate and cool along the coast. Victoria is also Australia's wettest mainland state, with the north-west receiving an average of 250 millimetres, but the mountainous areas to the north-east receive up to 1,800 millimitres a year.

The north-western part of Victoria is Victoria's Outback, with its expansive salt flats, sprawling sand dunes and arid scrub. Much of Victoria's Outback is encompassed by the Murray-Sunset National Park, which is the second largest park in the state.
