Prison Boab Tree - Derby - The Kimberley - Australia Derby Jetty from the Air - The Kimberly - Australia

Derby is a quiet sort of town but is a good base to explore the Buccaneer Archipelago, and a good stopover after your journey along the Gibb River Road (if travelling West). Surrounded by mud flats and some of the world's largest tides (up to 11 metres), Derby is crocodile and fishing country.

Boabs - the big bulbous trees so familiar in this area of The Kimberley - line the main streets. Just out of town you can see the Boab Prison Tree, a hollow tree 14 metres wide and said to house prisoners that were being transported to Derby Goal. At sunset locals and tourists alike make their way to the wharf to walk around the jetty or throw a line in.

Derby is also a good place to catch a scenic flight or cruise of the Buccaneer Archipelago and the Horizontal Falls.
