Kununurra
The Kimbeley
Kununurra was created in the 1960's as the centre of the Ord River Irrigation area. With its proximity to Lake Argyle, Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles) and the Gibb River Road, Kununurra is a great starting point for exploring The Kimberley. The town itself is quite pleasant, located next to Lake Kununurra and close to the Mirima National Park, which is home to rugged red formations, not unlike the Bungle Bungles but on a much smaller scale.
There is a great range of accommodation available including backpackers, apartments, motels and some beautifully located caravan parks.
As the largest town in the East Kimberley region, Kununurra is a great place to stock up in preparation for the Gibb River Road, particularly if you have driven in from the Northern Territory and handed over all your fruit and vegetables at the border.
Kununurra Attractions
Lake Kununurra
Lake Kununurra offers boat cruises, sailing, fishing, swimming and wildlife viewing. Kununurra Cruises also offer a Sunset BBQ Cruise, it is however BYO, so if you would like an alcoholic drink over dinner then make sure you take some along, they supply the glasses and ice.
Kelly's Knob
Kelly's Knob is a short drive from town and is a great sunset spot. It affords panoramic views across the town, the Ord River Irrigation area, Lake Kununurra and the Mirima National Park.
Ivanhoe Crossing
For those with 4WD vehicles, in the Dry season you can try your hand at driving across the Ivanhoe Crossing. Water flows across the causeway year-round, but is impassable in the Wet season. You can fish for Barramundi here, but take care as saltwater crocodiles are abundant.
Mirima National Park
Mirima National Park is a short drive from Kununurra town centre and is home to a miniature version of the beautiful rock formations famous in the Bungle Bungle range. There is great bushwalking here including opportunities to see aboriginal rock art and sweeping and spectacular views of the East Kimberley. The national park is for day visiting only.
Lake Argyle
So large, this man-made lake is considered an inland sea. Lake Argyle is a 40min drive from Kununurra and there is much to see and do including boat cruises, bush walking, fishing and more. See our section on Lake Argyle for more details.
