Lake Argyle
The Kimberley
Created after the damming of the Ord River, Lake Argyle is a spectacular body of water holding up to 12 times the volume of Sydney Harbour. Taking a cruise is one of the best ways to experience the grandeur of the lake, its islands and surrounding red ridges whilst getting close to the abundant wildlife including wallabies, over 250 species of bird and freshwater crocodiles. The sunset cruise is particularly beautiful as you start to get a sense of the size of the lake whilst watching the colours change in this amazing landscape.
There are great fishing spots on the lake and you can fish from the shore or on the water. If you have your own boat there is a boat ramp near Lake Argyle Resort or you can join a fishing tour. Silver Cobbler, Sooty Grunter and Barramundi are all on offer in the lake.
If fishing isn't your thing there is also swimming, canoeing, bushwalking and bird-watching to keep you busy.
You can also visit the historic Argyle Downs Homestead Museum, originally home to the pioneering Durack family who moved from Queensland to the East Kimberley with 2000 head of cattle, and established the first cattle station in the region in the late 1800's.
Lake Argyle Resort have a range of accommodation options available, including cabins and camping, but you can also make the lake a day trip from Kununurra (it's roughly 40mins away by road). Scenic flights over Lake Argyle are also available from Kununurra.
